AIIB Observer Vol. 2 is out!

The AIIB Observer 2024, published by the NGO Forum on ADB, brings to light significant concerns from civil society regarding the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank’s (AIIB) operations. With a call for a boycott of the upcoming AIIB Annual Meeting in Uzbekistan, the Observer presents several key issues surrounding AIIB’s investments and practices. One major concern is AIIB’s involvement in Indonesia’s Mandalika project, where local communities are facing displacement, land grabbing, and environmental damage. Another article examines AIIB’s investments in Bayfront Infrastructure Management, raising questions about the transparency and accountability of these financial innovations. The Observer also highlights AIIB’s continued capital market investments in fossil fuels, contrasting with the bank’s claims of promoting sustainable infrastructure.

Additionally, the report addresses the controversial Rogun Mega-Dam project in Tajikistan, where civil society groups argue against funding due to the environmental and social risks involved. In Uzbekistan, AIIB’s energy investments come under scrutiny for being neither clean nor environmentally sustainable, further challenging the bank’s green finance narrative. Lastly, the Observer includes recommendations from 34 civil society organizations on how AIIB can strengthen its Project-Affected People’s Mechanism, emphasizing the need for better protection for communities impacted by AIIB-funded projects. The AIIB Observer 2024 serves as a critical platform for civil society, urging AIIB to commit to greater transparency, inclusivity, and accountability in its global development efforts.
